What do you require from your mobile phone? GPRS, BT, Color display, fhassion cover etc...? And do you have any favorite products suchs as Nokia, SonyEriccson etc..?

Bottom line: What are you gonna do with it?

Bottom Line is for calling purpose mainly.

I favor: 1) long standby time
    2) polyphonic sound

color disply: mm.... is only optional
GPRS&MMS I guess that most phones are equipped now with that.

Well the Nokia 3510 fills those requirements, long standby time (up to 13days), polyphonic sounds, able to receive MMS and has GPRS. Bad thing is that it doesn't have BT, datacable or IR so it cannot be operated as a modem. Price goes around 230 euros depending where you buy it.

Thanks for your suggestion. I guess that Nokia 3XXX series
is for teenagers. In my country, mobilephone sometimes is
a representation for class. How is it in Finland?

    Any more suggestions?

In the price range you mentioned, I can't think of any other phone that has GPRS and polyphonic sound than Nokia 3510. The GPRS in that phone is for WAP use only, so if you want to use it as a modem, then it is not for you. If you can think of living without polyphonic ring tones and MMS, you should also consider Ericsson T65 and Siemens M50 or if you are willing to pay a little more Siemens S/ME 45. They are good phones and maybe a bit more "grown-up" models.

You asked about the use of phone as a status symbol. The mobile phone is such a common thing in Finland, that it is no longer considered a status symbol. Of course there are people who want the latest models and want everyone else to notice that they have the latest model from Nokia for example.. But most people use their phones as instruments to stay in touch with their friends and family. When their children go to school, the parents buy them a phone for safety. The situation was a lot different 10 years ago, when the phones were very expensive and only businessmen used them. They wanted everyone to see their phones.

For myself the mobile phone is a practical way of staying in touch. I usually have two phones with me. My own and one from the company where I work. Mobile phones are also for me a way of earning money. I run a store, that sells phones. So thanks to mobile phones I have also something else than my upper lip on my bread..

Edit: Jim77 mentioned the Panasonic GD75. It has polyphonic ring tones and there is also a GPRS version of that phone called Panasonic GD76.

I am from a city called Shanghai which probably most of you have heard of. I have noticed that the most popular mobilephone brand there is
Samsung. Many people there buy the Samsung T-108(Chinese
version of T100). I personally think that Samsung mobilephones are
really overpriced. However, their design is more elegant than Nokia.
Their market share in China is growing fast. I think that it will be a
    strong competitor to Nokia.

I like Nokia mobilephone's many practical functions. I wonder when
they will make another innovation like the 8110?

I am interested in Nokia 6510, Siemens M50 and Panosonic GD 75/76.

    That's my focus list now.

BTW, does Siemens ME/S 45 has long standby time? Do they
have infra-red port? What is the difference between tehm?

Siemens S/ME 45 have a talk time of 100-360 minutes and stanby time of 60-300 hours (manufacturer's data). In my use (a couple of messages and a couple of short phone calls per day) the battery of my ME 45 has to be charged about once a week (phone on 24 hours/day). S/ME 45 have infra red ports. Both models have the same functions, but ME 45 has improved resistance for shocks, moisture and dust.

and I am not going to.....

That's why I set the budget to 300 euro.
BTW, your suggestion of Panasonic is a good one.

The polyphonic sounds and ANY other fancy function is hard to find under 300e. For example GPRS with real data (Not 3510 WAP -only GPRS).
